Tools for Creating Online Assessments

Below are several websites that allow teachers to easily create online assessments:

  • Survey Monkey allows users to easily create online quizzes and surveys and export them to individual websites.  
  • Easy Test Maker is an online resource that allows teachers to create online tests.  Most of the features offered by Easy Test Maker are free, but some (such as Spell Check, Exam Builder, and Test Duplicator) are only offered to paid subscribers.
  • Hot Potatoes from Half-Baked Software includes six applications, enabling you to create interactive multiple-choice, short-answer, jumbled-sentence, crossword, matching/ordering and gap-fill exercises for the World Wide Web. Hot Potatoes is freeware, and you may use it for any purpose or project you like. It is not open-source.  
  • QuizStar is a free, online, test creation software that is produced by the popular 4Teachers organization.
  • Quia - allows users to create a variety of quizzes, games and surveys.  Allows you to create a database of questions then randomally selects the number of questions that you specify so each students can have a different test. It is not freeware.
  • Google Docs allows you to create online assessments and surveys.  It also has a self grading feature.
  • Flubaroo allows you to grade assessments created in Google Docs. 

 

Online Rubrics

Here are some websites that offer teachers rubrics to be used in instruction, or software to help create rubrics:

  • RubiStar is another tool produced by the 4Teachers organization.  RubiStar is a free, online, rubric creation software. 
  • In Kathy Schrock's Guide for Educators, longtime teacher, Kathy Schrock, has compiled a helpful list of online rubrics available for teachers to use in instruction. 
  • Teacher Planet has several rubrics available online for teachers to use.  Rubrics listed are organized according to subject and cover grades K-12. 
  • Teach-nology.com is an extremely useful resource for teachers interested in using online tools to create rubrics.  Teach-nology has a long list of software designed to help teachers create rubrics.
