Effective and Efficient using Quandary

Using the Web to Communicate

A Quandary Maze for Teachers

Introduction:

At your last staff meeting your building principal made a presentation regarding a new building-level initiative.  The focus of the initiative is on improving both internal and external communications by utilizing available web-based and electronic tools.  In the end, you and your colleagues are faced with the challenge of opening the lines of communication with each other, students, parents and the community.  The focus here will be on proper communication between teacher and parent.

In order to begin the initiative, your principal has prepared a professional development tool to help familiarize staff with some of the available means of teacher/parent communication and to teach staff how to align these tools to particular situations.  The professional development tool your principal has prepared is in the form of a Quandary maze which will guide you through several scenarios and require you to make choices as you proceed.

Standards:

The goal of this lesson aligns to standard six of the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession.  Standard six, Collaboration and Communication, states that "teachers collaborate and communicate with students, parents, other educators, administrators and the community to support student learning."  Specifically element 6.1 states "teachers communicate clearly and effectively."  The learning objectives in this lesson are intended to assist teachers in meeting these standards.

Learning Objectives:

Using a Quandary interactive maze the learner will...

  1. choose the correct method of communicating disruptive behavior concerns to parents/guardians.
  2. choose the correct method of communicating to parents that their student is to be a recipient of an award.
  3. choose the correct method of communicating requests for volunteer assistance to parents/guardians.
  4. choose the correct method of communicating academic progress to parents/guardians.
  5. choose appropriate communication methods that align with the Family Education Privacy Rights Act (FERPA).

Getting Started:

The maze that you will complete for this lesson was built using a software application called Quandary.  It is on a separate page that can be found by clicking the link below.  Once you enter the site you will be read a variety of scenarios and then be asked to make choices or decisions based on the scenario.  Based on your selection you will be taken to the next page where the scenario will grow and you will make another decision.  Incorrect decisions are followed with an explanation as to why your choice was not correct.

When you are ready to begin, click the link below to enter the maze.

Lesson Preparation Process:

This lesson was built through a collaborative effort by summer 2010, Instructional Applications of the Internet students.  Several collaboration tools were used in its construction.  Collaboration for the development of this lesson started out slowly due to some misunderstanding and/or confusion regarding what exactly was required.  After several attempts to begin the process using the Blackboard discussion area, our first successful steps toward defining the project came when the online meeting tool Elluminate was introduced.  Elluminate allowed for members of the class to meet synchronously and chat about ideas for the direction of this project.

There were two primary benefits to using Elluminate early on in the project.  The first was the synchronous nature of the discussion.  The early stages of any project are difficult and this difficulty is only amplified by asynchronous discussion.  Being able to share ideas and offer feedback immediately helped define the project scope and the steps necessary for completion.

The second advantage was the voice chat capabilities provided by Elluminate.  Having live chat allowed everyone to offer their suggestions much more candidly than if they were required to compose them in text.  This is especially useful in the early, brainstorming phases of a project.  In addition, Elluminate has the capability to record the entire session which was a benefit to those who were unable to attend the scheduled online meeting.

The second collaborative tool used for this project was this wiki page.  Hosted by pbworks, this site allowed each member of the site to contribute to the design and building of the decision scenarios for the maze.  Not only could each student contribute content but each student could modify or delete the work of others.  The wiki site became the main design area and also a discussion area since each wiki page also allows contributors to leave comments.  This was our "drawing board" and, although it became a bit aesthetically unpleasing, it was an invaluable tool in "mashing" of ideas into one cohesive end product.

Perhaps the biggest challenge presented by this project was the use of the Quandary software.  Even though the wikis and Elluminate were great for collaboration, Quandary does not provide such a mechanism.  Quandary is installed on a computer and the maze is built locally on that computer.  The only way to share the maze is to zip up the files and allow someone else to download it to their computer.  This made building the maze, as a group, a bit of a challenge.

Yes, I'm wondering what I should be doing also. Has anyone heard from John?

I was wondering if it would be a good idea for us to assign decision point numbers in the outlines of our scenarios. If we number each scenario 1,2,3, etc. when the maze is made the person making it just needs to add an offset number to each decision point. Alternatively, each scenario could be given a starting decision point number to use.

Hi, All!

In response to a few of the posts....

The scenarios can feed from one to the next..... as John has shown so far, this is the basic outline for the first scenario. Once that one is complete, you create a fake/transfer decision point that usually has a comment of some sort.... then it can feed to the next scenario. So all three scenarios go into the same maze. It is also possible for each choice to feed back to the question and only the correct answer to feed to the "transfer" decision point.

I really like the basics - do we want to jazz it up w/a different font/background/etc???? That's probably a bit down the road.

Alll flow charts are going to be entered into Quandary anyway, so it doesn't matter what format it's sent in.... it's just a visual - a scanned picture of a napkin works just as well :-).

I think the more "fun" and silly it is, the better - people like being entertained while they learn, eh?

Why don't we number the scenarios, then just give me/John the flow charts and we can put them in Q.... if we don't hear from John by Thursday's conference call, I can jump in and begin creating the maze..... If he's having a family emergency, he should take care of that first.... he's already put a lot into this getting us all moving :-).

Also - IDK where to find the old session info - can it be posted here? I think it was on the vista site, but if you have it handy, would you mind reposting? Sorry!

The cover story states that communication needs to improve with eachother, parents, students, and the community. The objectives deal with communication to parents only. Do we want to have the scenario to fit the four objectives, or are we planning on having more objectives for each of the four areas of communication? This is where I have gotten a little lost in trying to follow what is happening.

Paula Wagner said

It seems that our 4 objectives will be a big enough job to do in a short amount of time. I think we should modify the cover story to match the teacher/parent communication.

I can work on it this weekend.... send it on :-). John - take care of yourself and your family.

Hi, All -

I've added the file so far.... I "deformalized" it a bit.... please review it and see what you think. Check out "Disruptive Dan" and see how it looks.... I can go back to the original version, but thought this flowed nicely in the maze. Can we add some FERPA info, etc. to the scenario summary screen??? Please advise - I can work on this some more tomorrow evening.... I know I've taken a few liberties w/screen color, font, etc... and will change as we wish.... but we also have to get our own websites done, so lots to do :-)!

Laura looks like you have a great start on the maze. Thanks for doing this work. You can take those liberties when you have volunteered to do the work. Don't worry about that.

Laura, I think you did a really nice job - I like the colors! Let me know if you need help making sense of the volunteer scenario - if you want to trim one of the branches it might be less of a beast to enter! If you run into time issues I can help.

Hi, All -

Ok, so the two responses received encourage me to continue :-). I have four scenarios, five if we include the report card. I will set them all to the maze as it looks so far.... easy things to change are fonts, colors, etc. I'm not going to add pictures, etc. as it takes a lot more time and the files need to be linked, etc. I think the maze will be fine w/o, but if someone wants to add after I get the maze in, great! I'm going to finish up the website assignment tonight, and work on this more tomorrow.... I find myself working on this instead, as I think making the mazes is really fun... I went with the PD/team approach, as I could see this really being something done in a school.... I think for assets we might just switch back to points or something, that way at the team meeting they could talk about how many points were earned - I really liked the sillier approach, but with the framework established, think it might be more fitting to go back to something more realistic... not sure yet - will think on that later!

Also, I have added - as noted in the wiki - a "summary" screen where we can educate... so I think tha's covered.

Laura, thanks for your work. I have been playing with Quandary working on my website - so I know this is considerable work and I didn't add any token system. I agree that we don't need the graphics, ok to leave those out. If you need anything, please let me know.

Wednesday night group got things pretty well finalized, just waiting on the fabulous maze from Laura! John is finishing some text on the "experience"....:)

We are asking for everyone to review after Laura posts the maze. Then post a comment here on the wiki with your go/no go....last chance folks, due Friday.

Super job on this, guys! I'll be watching for the maze. Please let me know if I can edit or something. I am so sorry that I couldn't make the meeting - my daughter's softball team made the play-offs tonight...

Hi, All -

I'm uploading the maze as of now.... as you see, it still needs wrap up screen text - if anyone wants to write it, I'll gladly import it into the maze on my laptop.... also, I took out the assets. They're fun, but I don't think really NEED to be in the maze... and they take some time to add in and calculate accurately. If someone else wants to add them, great! :-) I'm happy to make the edits from here, but if someone wants to take it from here and finish it up, that'd be great, too!!!! The more the merrier. I can spend another hour on it tomorrow morning, but if someone else has more time - run with it. Thanks! :-)

Hi Laura,
Nice job! I do not see the Quandry file itself - can you upload that too? All I can find is the htm file.
Thanks!

Thanks - I will probably not be home at that time, but I will take a look when I get home. I can see some tweaks to make in the volunteer scenario, I can add them and reupload for everyone to continue working. I will post a note when I grab the maze so we do not have multiple people making changes at the same time.

Laura, I just looked again....the first time I went through the maze I missed the mention of pleasebringit in the later decision point. I think the volunteer scenario is fine as is.

Good morning, all!

Sorry I couldn't make the call last night. My one son is at camp and it was the other's "special evening with Mom and Dad" since we're picking the older boy up tonight. I added to the maze based on what was noted here.... I'm sorry - I didn't add another link to the Annie scenario - but I did add the other stuff.... I adjusted the Sue wrap up as it mentioned "there may be underlying issues," but that seemed a bit confusing as the previous screen noted that the reason she'd been acting up was due to the death of the gmother - which seemed to be the underlying cause of her behavior. It's hard to spell behavior correctly - earlier this year I wrote Canadian Law lessons and so have gotten used to spelling it "behaviour." :-) - Ok, back on the subject!

Please review and let me know if you see any other changes. I think at this point we're pretty good and likely don't need to make major edits... but I might have a typo or two. Should we plan to submit around noon?

How do we submit?????? :-)

Hi again!

Look at the two docs - Training Maze...at 7am. I inadvertently added a version that is not the most up to date before it, and can't seem to delete it from the site. Sorry -

Laura and all,
I made a few minor changes to decision points 6, 22, and 36 and uploaded a new version. It is linked under Go to the maze, but we might need to change this link after others review and edit. At some point do we want to get rid of our 'working' text at the bottom of the page?

Thanks again to Laura for all of her hard work!!

If everyone can look at the maze that Carolyn linked to "Go to the Maze" and give their thumbs up, it can be submitted (by noon).

I can remove all of the notes at the bottom before noon.
