Description:

Flickr is an online photo management and sharing application. You can UploadOrganize and Share your photos and videos with "the people who matter to you". With the Maps feature, you can share where your photos and videos were taken and see others taken near you or around the world. You can Make Stuff like: custom cards, photo books, framed prints, DVDs, etc. You can get updates from family, friends and colleagues who you invite to see and share your images, too.

There are several different ways to upload your photos and videos to Flickr. You can organize your photos/videos into sets and collections that are totally customizable by you. You can add descriptions and tags (like keywords) to help identify them. You can share your photos/videos to the world, to specific groups or to family and friends. You have control over privacy settings so only certain people would be allowed viewing access.

Other Features

Once you invite family, friends or other contacts to join Flickr, they can contact you through Flickr Mail and they can leave comments about each of your photos or videos. Use Flickr to share other items, too, like: illustrations, paintings, designs, etc. If your invitees don't have a Flickr account, you can use the Guest Pass feature to grant them special access. You're able to expire the passes whenever you like. You can also post Notes directly on the images to describe details — they aren't permanently attached and only show up when they are moused over by the viewer.

Platform & System Requirements

Flickr works on both Mac and PC platforms and their are a variety of ways to upload your images.. When you sign up for a new Flickr account, you'll need to sign in with a Yahoo! ID. If you don't have a Yahoo! ID account, you can create one from the Yahoo! sign up link right from the Flickr website.

Use in Educational Settings

I can definitely see Flickr being used in many different educational settings. It can be useful in photography classes, graphic design classes, and other art classes. Students could share their images to one location so they could see each other's work. It can be used in almost any class where students would need to share visuals for a report or presentation. For instance, if one person in the group were in charge of printing the report or assembling the final presentation.

The following link shows how an art history teacher used Flickr as a discussion tool for studying paintings.

The students have posted notes on the image and have a discussion about the painting.
