Scenario One (ID Model) Group Project

Page history last edited by John Idell 14 years, 6 months ago

Here are a couple of web-sites that I think could be helpful: http://www.instructionaldesign.org/models/index.htmlhttp://www.uab.edu/uasomume/cdm/id.htmI'll look for more, but it's a start.

Here is a link to the Dick and Carey ID model, just as an F.Y.I. I thought this would be helpful should we decide to use this model: http://www.umich.edu/~ed626/Dick_Carey/dc.html

The following are some links to fourth grade science projects: http://www.uen.org/cc/uen/core/pub/displayCoreCourse.action?ccId=3040, http://activities.macmillanmh.com/science/ca/grade4/index.html.

The second link is from a fourth grade textbook. I think that it provides some good examples of what fourth graders learn in science today.

Example of the 5E's: http://www.ied.edu.hk/apfslt/v9_issue2/muammer/index.htm#con, Michelle, I think this concept would be a good choice to use, so I will research a little tonight and provide some thoughts and ideas tomorrow, either when we meet, or sometime after work.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Mayberry local schools has decided to revamp it's science curriculum to better emphasize the development of effective instructional materials. They would like it to be based on a constructivist approach to learning. To handle the fourth grade, Michelle Hagan and John Idell were assigned to see what they could do to make this happen. To help incorporate this constuctivist approach to learning, they decided that the 5E's method of instructional design would best accomplish this. The reason for choosing the 5E's approach was based on data collected (as of spring, 2006) and it's successful track record. The following are just some examples of it's success.

 They are:

-more than 97,000 posted and discrete examples of universities using the 5E model in their course syllabi;

-more than 73,000 examples of curriculum materials developed using the 5E model;

-at least three states that strongly endorse the 5E model, including Texas, Connecticut, and Maryland;

-more than 235,000 lesson plans developed and implemented using the BSCS 5E Instructional Model;

-more than 131,000 posted and discrete examples of teacher education programs or resources that use the 5Es;

With the success rate in mind, it only makes sense to examine what exactly the 5E's approach to learning is. The 5E's approach to learning is comprised of five sections. They are as follows:

  1. Engagement
  2. Exploration
  3. Explanation
  4. Elaboration
  5. Evaluation

I'm not entirely sure how to get started, but I would think that we should identify an Instructional Design model to use first. After that, we can then incorporate the constructivist approach into that model. I think that this should be a good start. Michelle, please feel free to agree or disagree. I will look for some information regarding Instructional Design and add the links once found!!

Hi John,

Sorry it's taken me awhile to respond. I do almost all of my work on weekends. I have a couple of links I found that might be useful too.

http://carbon.ucdenver.edu/~mryder/itc_data/idmodels.html

There are a bunch of different models listed. I thought the Discovery learning in particular was relevant for our project. I'll look at more tomorrow.

I found another link that is an example of a school which incorporated constructivsm into the Dick and Carey model-
http://www.ncsu.edu/meridian/jul99/coastal/coastal3.html Do you think we should be looking at doind something similar to this?

Michelle,

Not a problem, I understand completely about doing work on the weekends. I do like the example of the school which incorporated constructivsm into the Dick and Carey model. I think that might be a good framework for what we need to do. Not sure where to go from here. I guess I will look for some 'projects' that the typical 4th grade class might do so that we can start applying the Dick and Carey model. Let me know your thoughts and maybe we could start soon. Thanks!!!

Michelle,
I have some family obligations to take care of this afternoon, so I'm not sure how much I will get done leater. I noticed that you work at the Univ. of Akron. I have time tomorrow after work when I could meet you there if you would like. If not, let me know how you would like to proceed. Not being a teacher, much of this assignment is very foreign to me, so I'm a little unsure how to proceed. Thanks!!

Hi John,

I just emailed you some more ideas late last night. I'm not a teacher either so I am kind of fumbling my way through. I am actually off work tommorrow because I have some stuff I have to do at home. What time do you get off work? I could try to arrange to meet you. I did some more research and really like the 5 e's design model. If you don't mind I will email you some ideas, I think I can make a flowchart which demonstrates the design process, and I found a research article which shows that it is successful, especially in the science curriculum. I also found a website which gives sample science lesson plans using the 5 e's.

Michelle,

I can meet you around 4:30-4:45. I live in Tallmadge, but work work until 4:00 in Macedonia, so I can meet you at Akron U. or some other place that works for you after work. Let me know what works best. Thanks!!
