Setup & Essentials
- Students have a tendency to check if screens that they interact with are touch screens, as so many of them are in today's world. It doesn't hurt to have a supply of glass cleaning wipes on hand.
- Ensure that every device has the appropriate equipment for user interaction. Many pieces of software require a mouse and keyboard inputs. Some are compatible with audio inputs, scanners, cameras, and other pieces of technology
- Students have a tendency to manipulate settings and parameters on desktops and laptops that they use.
- On a windows machine, students will sometimes go into the settings menu and manipulate various aspects (mouse, keyboard, etc).
- If accessing a windows machine, from the "start menu" you can access the "settings". Under settings, many of the manipulations users can make are found under the "Ease of Access" selection. Settings for items like mouse and keyboard can be found there along with others.
- If the malfunctioning item is not located there, try checking under "Devices" or search specifically using the search bar at the top.
- If all else fails, try rebooting the computer in "Safe Mode". This can be done by pressing the F8 key during a system restart.
- Pressing the "alt+tab" keys will allow users to switch between what window and a piece of software they are currently running.
- If the user is working with a touchscreen item, such as a tablet or laptop, various hand gestures may open or close various programs or applications.
- NOTE: Many companies vary with what gestures perform what actions. Many devices offer a complete list of gestures and movements under the "settings" menu, usually under touchpad or user interface.
- An import thing to know is how to disable the touch settings on some devices. If the screen is broken, dirty, or has some other malfunction, the touchscreen or input device can be disabled. This is done through the device manager which can be found through a simple search on the "settings" menu. Once the defective driver, device, or software has been located, it can be either enabled, disabled, or uninstalled.
- WARNING: uninstalling a device may lead to complications during system updates and may result in the loss of essential software for various interface components.
