Flipping for English
Flipping an English Classroom can be a lot like other subjects. Its all about getting your students to take responsibility for their learning. It's about sparking their curiosity and creating motivation to find information and learn something new.
Example Ideas for Flipping the English Classroom
(The ideas below were all pulled from Cheryl Morris' website about flipping the English class)
Grammar
- Look into online applications specifically for grammar. Grammar Ninja and Chomp Chomp are two examples of online games that are specific to this.
- Have students make videos of themselves explaining a grammar concept or create presentations of themselves reading something they've written.
Writing
- Make videos of specific skills and give students ways to practice them in class.
- Have students create presentations using their own writing to explain a specific skill.
Reading
- Make a video of yourself reading pages from a book. Ask questions for students to "discover" a particular element. Have the students find more examples in class.
- Have students rewrite scenes from a book as either Facebook or Twitter dialogues either by themselves or a partner.
- Have students blog about what they're reading.
Support
There is no manual to flip a classroom but there is support out there - especially for flipping the English class!
